Questions to Ask Before Buying “AI-Powered” ERP
Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing up everywhere in enterprise resource planning (ERP), and vendors are making big promises about what it can do. But before jumping on the AI-powered ERP bandwagon, businesses should take a closer look at what they’re actually getting. In his Tech Insider article, Omar Ghazi of Acumatica outlines eight questions businesses should ask before investing in an AI-enabled ERP. His focus is less on the hype and more on practical issues like accuracy, security, transparency and human oversight. For starters, can you trust the AI? Companies need to know how recommendations are generated, how accurate they are and what happens when the system gets something wrong. A vendor should be able to explain how its AI is tested and monitored. Then there’s your data. Where does it go? Who can access it? How is sensitive business information protected? These questions become even more important when AI is analyzing large amounts of ERP data. Ghazi also points to the importance of human oversight. AI shouldn’t become a black box that employees blindly follow. People need to understand recommendations, question them when necessary and step in when the situation calls for human judgment. The bigger takeaway is simple: don’t buy an ERP just because it has AI. Make sure you understand what the AI actually does, how trustworthy it is and whether it solves real problems for your business. The best AI-enabled ERP isn’t necessarily the one with the most AI. It’s the one that can deliver useful results you can actually trust.
