Your ERP Is Ready To Go Live. But Is Your Business Ready To Run?

News

Getting an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system through testing and reaching the go-live date can feel like the finish line. But according to Komal Goyal’s Forbes Technology Council article, a successful implementation from a technical standpoint doesn’t necessarily mean the business is prepared to operate once the new system takes over. The problem often appears after go-live, when seemingly minor issues begin affecting real business operations. Orders can’t be processed, invoices are delayed, reports don’t reconcile, or employees fall back on spreadsheets and manual workarounds just to keep things moving. One of the biggest mistakes organizations can make is assuming that successful user acceptance testing means everything is ready. Goyal argues that testing needs to go beyond the “happy path.” Teams should test realistic exceptions, missing or incorrect data, stuck approvals, inventory issues, and other problems that could disrupt billing, shipping, payroll, or financial close. Another challenge is people. Training employees on how the new system should work doesn’t always account for the unofficial processes and workarounds they’ve developed over the years. Sometimes that institutional knowledge isn’t documented anywhere, and it can disappear when the new ERP replaces the old way of working. The article’s biggest takeaway is that go-live readiness belongs to the business, not just the implementation team or system integrator. Before launching, organizations need to ask more than, “Does the system work?” They also need to ask, “Can our people, processes, and operations continue to work when something doesn’t go as planned?” The best way to avoid a post-go-live war room may be to do that preparation before the pressure is on.
