As AI Agents Move Into ERP, Governance Becomes More Important Than Ever
AI (artificial intelligence) agents are moving beyond simply answering questions and summarizing information. According to tech expert Robert Kramer in his recent Forbes article, the bigger question is no longer just what AI can do—it’s what organizations should actually allow it to do. That distinction matters when AI is connected to ERP (enterprise resource planning). An agent that recommends a next step is one thing. An agent that can change a purchase order, move inventory, adjust a production plan, or initiate a financial transaction is another.
As AI agents become more involved in business workflows, Kramer argues that organizations need to clearly define the boundaries. What information can the AI use? What actions can it take on its own? When does a human need to step in? And perhaps most importantly, who is responsible for the outcome if something goes wrong? This is where governance becomes critical. AI can move information and automate decisions quickly, but it can’t fix unclear processes or determine who should own a business decision. In fact, giving AI more autonomy may expose those existing problems even faster. ERP also continues to play an important role as AI works across multiple systems. A decision might begin in a CRM, trigger a supply chain response, and eventually result in a financial transaction. Throughout that process, organizations still need controls, permissions, audit trails, and accountability.
Kramer’s biggest takeaway is that successful AI adoption isn’t about giving agents as much autonomy as possible. It’s about introducing that autonomy carefully and intentionally. For CIOs, a practical starting point may be choosing one specific business decision, defining the rules and approval process around it, and gradually increasing the AI’s authority as the organization gains confidence. The real test isn’t whether an AI agent can take action. It’s whether the business knows when it should—and when it should stop.
