The long term item that will affect the federal budget the most is healthcare. The 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s all saw a sharp increase in healthcare spending that quickly grew faster than the economy did. However, the amount the U.S. spends on healthcare has been decreasing over the past few years. This can be attributed to less innovation in healthcare devices and a decrease in the number of blockbuster drugs being sold. However, these declines need to continue as the current state of the healthcare industry still doesn’t have a good future outlook.
